When to plant
Plant in the spring after the last frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms. The soil temperature should be at least 65°F (18°C).
Where to plant
Choose a location with medium to wet, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–7.0) in part shade or filtered sun. Elephant ears can tolerate full sun if they receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day, but they may struggle in dry soil and full sun. In very hot or dry climates, plant in light shade with a couple of hours of direct sunlight. Elephant ears also prefer a location protected from strong winds, which can damage their large leaves.
