This beautiful Royal Doulton “Bacchus” Toby Character Jug is in excellent condition, no chips, grazing or scratches. Toby Jugs have been around since the 18th century, but it wasn’t until 1930 when they became a household name.
Royal Doulton drastically revised its popular Toby Jugs and Character Jugs were introduced. During the 1920s. Each new design would feature the subject’s head and shoulders instead of a head-to-toe depiction, bringing the English cultural characters to life.
The Bacchus jug was named after the Roman god of wine and revelry, Bacchus, is also the equivalent to the Greek god Dionysus. The jugs were designed with imagery related to wine and grapes, reflecting Bacchus's association with these elements.
