The MiG-19 Farmer, the first supersonic fighter from the former USSR, took its maiden flight in September 1953 and entered production the following year. It served as the Soviet Union's primary fighter during the late 1950s. An estimated 10,000 units, in various versions, were produced by the Soviet Union, China, Poland, and Czechoslovakia, with around 2,000 built in the People's Republic of China. Many nations, including Cuba, North Vietnam, North Korea, Iraq, and most Warsaw Pact countries, employed the MiG-19. The Soviet Union replaced it with the more advanced MiG-21 in the early 1960s, but other nations continued using it for years afterward.
