The Lockheed C-5A Galaxy, a colossal strategic airlifter, was developed in the 1960s for the U.S. Air Force. It's designed to transport oversized cargo and heavy equipment across vast distances. Built by Lockheed, it first flew in 1968 and entered service in 1970, then being the largest U.S. military aircraft. With a unique high wing, T-tail, and both nose and rear cargo doors for 'drive-through' loading, it could carry tanks, helicopters, and other large equipment. Early models faced wing fatigue issues, but these were addressed in the 1980s. Despite initial setbacks, the C-5A became a vital part of American global air mobility, supporting operations from the Vietnam War to worldwide humanitarian missions.
