Submarine, constructed at Germaniawerft in Kiel during 1902. German submarine development traces back to 1849 when Bavarian soldier Wilhelm Bauer conceived the idea of a submarine. In Kiel, he realized a model, built in 1850 as 'Brandtaucher' by August Howaldt at Schweffel and Howaldt. During a test run, the incomplete U-boat sank due to insufficient funds. In 1897, Karl Leps constructed an experimental diving boat with the hull number 333. In 1902, the 'Forelle' was built, based on plans by engineer Raymondo Lorenzo d´Equevilley-Montjustin, influenced by developers Claude Gobet, Gustave Zédé, Isaac Peral, and the Englishman Waddington. It was the first functional German U-boat, equipped with a conning tower, periscope, air purification system, and bilge pump. Powered by an electric motor using a 715 Ampère-hour capacity battery, the Forelle had a range of about 25 nautical miles at four knots speed.
