Post-Independence in 1947, Royal Enfield became the first motorcycle available in India in 1949, serving as the official motorcycle for the Indian Army and Police, with local production commencing in 1955. As the sole Indian motorcycle manufacturer for several decades, Royal Enfield was the primary supplier, offering a cost-effective and reliable mode of transport across vast distances. With fuel efficiency of 80 mpg and renowned reliability, Royal Enfield secured a unique position in India's national consciousness, becoming an integral part of Indian motorcycling culture, much like Harley-Davidson in America. Royal Enfield's retro design dominance is now influencing the entire market, with heritage brands being courted and created to rival it. Established in 1901, Royal Enfield's longevity has led other historic marques to partner with or be acquired by Indian motorcycle manufacturers in recent years, including Peugeot, Triumph, BSA, and Husqvarna.
