Originally started with a manga series that was written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball was initially inspired by the classic Chinese romance Journey to the West. The series follows the adventures of the protagonist, Son Goku, a warrior from another planet who from his childhood to adulthood trains martial arts and explores the world in search of seven spheres known as the Dragon Spheres, which summon a mystical dragon that grants a wish to the bearer of the spheres when gathered together. Throughout his journey, Goku makes various friends and fights a wide variety of villains, many of whom are also looking for the Dragon Spheres. The series became a hit franchise replicated in series and feature films in Anime, Games, Toys and Collectibles. A common human in the past, the seventeenth android creation of Dr. Gero and Android 18 younger twin, was designed to serve Gero's revenge against Goku. Although his interests did not initially deviate from this expectation, Android 17 took care of killing Dr. Gero, who did not cooperate with Android 18 in enabling Android 16 for being considered inferior by 17. Android 17 returned a decade later in Dragon Ball Super, working as a ranger for a national park on a remote island, preserving the wildlife of hunters. He is married and has one child, with two more children being adopted. He is invited by Goku to join Universe Team 7 in the Tournament of Power and due to the sacrifice of Goku and Freeza to defeat Jiren, he is left as the only fighter left until the end of the tournament, making it the winner, and thus the only one who can make his wish in the Dragon Super Spheres.
