This box is a small treasure of the dying art of papier mache started by the Persians and passed on to the artisans of Kashmir, India. The papier mache process is time consuming and laborious, taking weeks to perfect such a piece, consisting of making a paper pulp and submerging in water for weeks, drying it again converting into pulp, covering with muslin cloth and overlay with plaster of Paris and on with the lacquer paint! You achieve a hard surface as seen in this beautiful box!
